The Dixville Flume from downstream

Details:

Dixville Notch is a rugged slash between Dixville Peak and Sanguinary Mountain. In the area are two nice waterfall, the Dixville Flume, and the Huntingdon Cascades. The Dixville Flume is a roadside falls located in Dixville Notch State Park. Flume Brook drops over a 12 foot horsetail, then a short sloping drop into a tight gorge. This is similar in formation, though not size, to the Flume in Franconia Notch. A similar action formed both gorges. The stream wears the intruding softer rock away leaving the rock on either side intact, thus forming the flume.

Geology and Bedrock Structure:

The surrounding bedrock is Quartz Monzonite

Photography Notes:

The Flume is a well shaded feature. Shooting early, late, or on overcast days is a must for a good photograph. A polarizer to cut glare, a warming filter to compensate for cool color tones, and a tripod to allow a long exposure are musts. A 50mm focal length should be adequate here.

Directions:

Dixville Flume is on Route 26, east of Dixville Notch in a well-signed roadside area a mile east of height of land..
