Details:

Bemis Brook Falls is a small waterfall that consists of a series of small cascades followed by a 10 foot drop into a small gorge. It lies on the way to Arethusa Falls, and is shortly upstream from Coliseum Falls. The contrast between the greenery and the red granite is rather stunning. This waterfall lies on a parallel segment of the Arethusa Falls trail. Bemis Brook Falls is a fairly level trip, until it's time to return to the main segment of the Arethusa Falls trail, when the trail very steeply ascends rejoin the trail. For this reason, I suggest visiting Bemis Brook Falls on the way back down. After all, it's far easier to climb downhill. On a trip downhill, pay close attention to the steep and eroded root ladder that functions as a trail. The pitch is steep enough that a fall here would be pretty bad indeed.

Geology and Bedrock Structure:

The rock formation the falls drop over is called the Black Cap Granite.

History:

Bemis Brook is named for Dr. Samuel Bemis, a Boston dentist who moved to Crawford Notch after visiting the area for many years.

Photography Notes:

Bemis Brook is at the bottom of a deep valley. Unless the sun is directly overhead, it's not a real concern. Morning, Afternoon, or overcast days are best for photography at Bemis Brook Falls. The colors here tend to be warm, so a warming filter isn't really necessary, however, a polarizing filter is crucial as the rocks are flat and wet and glare is an issue. Don't forget your tripod as this is a very good slow shutter study. The falls are close enough so that a zoom lens isn't going to make much difference. Pretty much all of your shots will be in the 50mm range.

Directions:

Bemis Brook Falls is found along the Arethusa Falls Trail. Arethusa Falls is a well-signed side road off of Route 302 about halfway between Bartlett and the Gates of the Notch. Park in the lot and the well marked side trail to Bemis Brook Falls is on the left after a short distance. The trail to the falls is fairly smooth until you pass Coliseum Falls at which point it becomes an eroded path with a multitude of roots that require some care to navigate without stumbling or twisting an ankle. Boots are recommended here.
