The falls from the base

Details:

Flume Cascade is located just east of the height of land on Route 302 that is referred to as the Gates of the Notch. Much like its neighbor just downhill, Silver Cascade, this waterfall is a series of cascades dropping down the side of Crawford Notch. Although I have seen height estimates up to 1000 feet for both of these falls, I think that figure is greatly exaggerated. Close scrutiny of the maps indicates about 420 vertical feet. With regard to the individual falls of the Flume Cascade, I don't believe that any single drop is more than 20 feet high until you are at the upper reaches (in pretty hairy territory,) but the water keeps falling and falling. I thoroughly enjoyed the climb up the falls, even if some bushwacking was needed to reach viewpoints of the higher falls.

Geology and Bedrock Structure:

The falls drape over a tall, irregular ledge of gneiss called the Littleton Formation

Photography Notes:

The best parts of the falls are barely visible from Route 302, and would require a dangerous climb up the falls. Some fairly pretty portions of the falls can be reached by scrambling up the left side of the falls. The standard trappings (polarizer, tripod, and warming filter) should come along for the ride. A wide range of focal lengths can be helpful in viewing and photographing the more distant (and interesting) portions of the falls.
